For a Brother absent from an Office:
1) St. Benedict says to us: "Indeed nothing is to be preferred to the Work of God."
So, feeling tired or feeling lazy should not make you miss Vigils (or None).
You need to make a little effort; a little push to get going.
2)Even brothers who are sent on a journey should try to pray the Office.
How much more we who are at home should not neglect what St. Benedict calls our "measure of service".
3)From the beginning of our monastic life, when we are novices, St. Benedict asks
whether we show "eagerness for the Work of God." When we made our profession, we committed ourselves to fidelity to the Divine Office.
For a Brother late for an Office:
The Holy Rule tells us that "on hearing the signal for an hour of the Divine Office,
the monk will immediately set aside what he has in hand.".
So, do not let your work or your study, or anything else make you come late to choir. Remember that God is waiting for you; remember also that your brothers are waiting for you
For the Bellringer of the week:
The bellringer, delegated by the abbot, is responsible for giving "the signal for the
hour of the divine office". The community depends on you to ring the bell at the correct time so that all the brothers may arrive on time for the office or for a
community activity.
For Breakages of the monastery's goods:
1) Not only the cellarer, but each of us, is told to "regard all the utensils and goods of the monastery as sacred vessels of the altar."
Sometimes, we are in such a hurry to do things that we become careless and drop
something.
2)St. Benedict says that whoever treats carelessly the things belonging to the
monastery should be corrected.
So we should avoid treating roughly the cars / the computers / the photocopier / etc.
So there you go my friends. In layman's terms: the procedure in asking for apology on failures and whatnot committed by a monk against monastic observance of a monastic customary.
