Timothy Johnson adds theologians to the list of Scripture, Tradition and Magisterium as the primary fonts in doing contemporary theology effectively. This supports the point of Johnson that the theologians are significant in doing theology because their task in making a good and sound discernment lies from their thoughtful and virtuous minds in making a critical but virtuous discernment in the truths of the revelation of God.
Their experience is primary in doing theology.
In addition to this, Johnson considers that theologians play an integral role in doing theology because it is in their process of making logical and reflective discernment that the whole community of believers understands what it is that God is speaking to their lives.
As what Johnson says about the primary task of theologians, “…the delicate task of discerning whether new developments in the lives of God’s people are in continuity or discontinuity with the tradition of the Church requires great learning”. “The theologian must also know the tradition in great depth and breadth if the conversation between the present and the past is to be healthy and productive, if it is to build the Church.”
Thus, The existence of theologians in the likes of Rahner, Ratzinger, Mansini and other countless virtuous, brilliant minds and hearts as witnesses in the Church, is primarily considered as key in the continuity of the practice of discernment as they continue to speak prophecy among God’s people on the truths of God’s revelation.
