What is an Indulgence? Does the Bible Teach Anything Abou It?

The Cathecism of the Catholic Church defines an indulgence as follows:

An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church....(1471)

Many saint suffer more than enough to satisfy God's justice. Jesus Christ didn't have any sins and yet suffered greatly. The Catholic Church gives "credit" for this suffering to person who have repented(just as prayer for another must be answered by god). The tranfer od merit through an indulgence is, then a profound acknoledgement of the communal and unified nature of the Mystical body of Christ(1 Cor 12:26). Hence indulgence can also be applied to the souls in purgatory.
