The sign of the Cross(usually, the gesture of drawing the right hand from forehead to breast and then from the left shoulder to the righ shoulder) is of a more devotional, reflective character . Christians made the "Sign of the Lord" in some form from at least the second century onward,as a means of recalling the cross and the Holy Trinity and of sanctifying every action. These rituals are "sacramentals": pious actions that aid in the Christiann life, according to one's interior state of heart and mind. Upon entering a church, Catholics apply holy water to themselves with the sign of the cross, to recall their baptism "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19)
