What is the Purpose of Genuflection and Making the sign of the cross?

Genuflection (that is bending the right knee to the floor and rising again) and crossing oneself when in the front of tabernacle in a Catholic church are signs of adoration of Jesus Christ. Catholics believe that Jesus is truly, substantially present in the sacrifice of the Mass and in consecrated hosts, which have become the Body,Blood,Soul and Divinity of our Lord. So we worship him by making a gesture of aduration, just as people bowed before Jesus in worship during his life on Earth (Mt 28:9). This follows from what we believe about the nature of the Mass, transubstantiation (literally, "change of substance"), and is the reason why Catholics Kneel and bpw their heads at their consecration.

The sign of the Cross(usually, the gesture of drawing the right hand from forehead to breast and then from the left shoulder to the righ shoulder) is of a more devotional, reflective character . Christians made the "Sign of the Lord" in some form from at least the second century onward,as a means of recalling the cross and the Holy Trinity and of sanctifying every action. These rituals are "sacramentals": pious actions that aid in the Christiann life, according to one's interior state of heart and mind. Upon entering a church, Catholics apply holy water to themselves with the sign of the cross, to recall their baptism "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19)
